Ed Council Meeting September 15, 2021. 2021-2022 school year.

BCSIS is hiring a tutor (Phil)

1. We hired a new academic tutor – huge celebration!

2. Coming into this year, the federal government supplied extra money to states. BVSD

added that $$ based on student needs at each school. BCSIS was allocated $21K, per year, for 3 years.

3. We submitted a proposal that he created with a team of teachers from the leadership

team, parents on SAC, and the whole faculty. Matthew Gray helped with the application.

  • a. Based on school goal of support for reading in K-5

  • b. The tutor we hire starts tomorrow, his name is Joe Kennedy.

i. Graduate student at CU with background of working with children

ii. Very adept at taking on reading support

c. Each grade level will use either the tutor or the highly trained paras in literacy support and work

d. Every grade level will have some reading groups going

e. Each student will be working with a teacher, tutor, highly trained para, or

additional resource people as needed

4. Teresa – every classroom has either a para or tutor for some amount of time each day

5. Last year we were allocated many hours of extra para time in order to meet the district's

COVID cohort grouping requirements. Those funds were for one year only.

6. Two years ago the tutor was paid for by ed council

7. When you add anyone who steps into the classroom for intervention, it helps the whole

class b/c it frees the teacher to work more individually with students

8. June: some of the younger grade parents are wondering how they can support the teachers

  • a. It's tough this year b/c parents are not allowed on the school grounds or in the

  • building during school hours this year

  • b. Dawn – could we have parents with proof of vaccination be approved through

  • bvsd? Phil will ask if there is a way around it.

    9. Talking about outside learning:

a. Teachers find it difficult to take lessons outside b/c of distractions as well as holding the integrity of the lesson

b. Erin – even the bathroom needs make outside learning tricky

Budget/fundraising update (Teresa & Melissa)

1. CGC we have to raise $75k – as of today we have raised $58k – we are $5k ahead of where we were 2 years ago at this point

a. She is going to change wording a bit to encourage families to sponsor other families if they are able

2. Melissa – regarding the new Friends of BCSIS website – in previous years we had a

printed directory and local parents could do a little ad in the directory to pay for the

printing of it. Now everything is digital and we are creating a paid placement for ads on

the site that will be promoted in different ways through the year.

  • a. So far it has raised $1,600

  • b. We have 8 sponsors and our goal is 12 more

  • c. Maybe class reps can send something out to the parents

  • d. Go to friendsofbcsis.org and click on partners

Fall Community Evening (Teresa)

1. October 14th

2. It will be virtual – the only way it could not be virtual would for it to be off campus

3. Normally we would have a presentation in the cafeteria – a relevant topic about school.

Autumn Social (Jessica)

1. The date is 9/23

2. We lost the band we have booked – we need a new one

a. Budget is $350 with a tip jar – we could go a little higher

b. Dhasa – violinist with background guitar – gypsy band

c. Reach out to our parents who are musicians

3. Fundraising table

  • a. Reps from Ed Council to answer questions

  • b. Lisa – need items for raffle

  • c. Stickers for commitment of 20 hour to the school – to give out to people who are knowing how they are giving their 20 hours of service to the school.
